Bethany McLean is an American business journalist best known for breaking open the Enron scandal and co-authoring The Smartest Guys in the Room, a definitive account of the company's collapse.

Bethany McLean is a financial journalist who, while writing for Fortune, published an early, prescient article questioning Enron’s finances under the headline “Is Enron Overpriced?” — helping to expose one of the largest corporate frauds in history.

She co-wrote, with Peter Elkind, The Smartest Guys in the Room (2003), the definitive account of Enron’s rise and spectacular fall, later adapted into an acclaimed documentary. She has also co-authored All the Devils Are Here on the 2008 financial crisis and written on other corporate and financial subjects.

McLean is recognized as one of the most incisive business journalists of her generation, with a gift for making complex financial scandals comprehensible.
