Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin were the authors of American Prometheus, the Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the basis for the film Oppenheimer.
Kai Bird is an American historian and biographer, and Martin J. Sherwin (1937–2021) was a historian who spent some twenty-five years researching the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Their collaboration, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005), won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography — a definitive, deeply researched account of the brilliant physicist who led the Manhattan Project and was later persecuted during the McCarthy era. It became the basis for Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film Oppenheimer.
Bird has written other notable biographies, and together he and Sherwin produced one of the most acclaimed works of biography of recent decades.
