Larry McMurtry was an American novelist and screenwriter best known for the Pulitzer Prize–winning epic Western Lonesome Dove and for Terms of Endearment.
Larry McMurtry grew up in ranching country in Texas, the setting and subject of much of his fiction, and became one of America’s most popular and acclaimed chroniclers of the West, past and present.
His masterpiece, Lonesome Dove (1985), an epic cattle-drive saga, won the Pulitzer Prize and is regarded as one of the great American Westerns. He also wrote The Last Picture Show and Terms of Endearment, both adapted into celebrated films, and shared an Academy Award for the screenplay of Brokeback Mountain.
McMurtry is celebrated for his vivid characters, his unsentimental yet affectionate portrayal of the West, and his gifts as a storyteller across page and screen.
