Olivie Blake is an American fantasy author whose darkly atmospheric novel The Atlas Six became a viral self-publishing sensation before a major commercial release made her one of the most discussed voices in contemporary fantasy.
Olivie Blake self-published The Atlas Six in 2020, accumulating a devoted readership through BookTok and online communities before Tor Books acquired it for a commercial release in 2022. The novel follows six magicians — the most powerful of their generation — who are invited to compete for initiation into a secret society called the Alexandrian Society, which protects the lost knowledge of history’s greatest libraries. As they spend a year living together, they study, manipulate, and betray one another in shifting alliances.
The Atlas Six has genuine strengths: an intriguing premise, a cast of morally complex characters who are all, to varying degrees, villains, and an atmosphere that sits in the dark academia tradition while pushing the genre’s usual aesthetic in a more genuinely sinister direction. Blake’s willingness to write characters without redemptive arcs is refreshing in a genre that often insists on likability. The philosophical dialogue scattered through the text gives the book intellectual pretensions that are mostly earned.
The weaknesses are real and should be noted. The plot can feel underpowered relative to the character work, some readers find the prose overwrought, and the story ends on a cliff-hanger that demands the sequels. Readers who need narrative satisfation in individual volumes will find The Atlas Six frustrating. But for readers who enjoy character-driven fantasy with a dark, competitive atmosphere and complicated ethics, it delivers something genuinely distinctive.
