Patrick Lencioni is an American management consultant and author whose business fable The Five Dysfunctions of a Team has become one of the most widely read books on organizational leadership and team performance.

Patrick Lencioni is the founder of The Table Group, a management consulting firm, and has written a series of business fables in which fictional scenarios dramatize leadership principles. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, published in 2002, is his most successful: a short novel following a CEO hired to turn around a struggling technology company whose executive team is mired in dysfunction, followed by a model section that explains the framework the story illustrates.

The five dysfunctions — absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results — form a pyramid in which each layer depends on the one below. The framework is simple, memorable, and practically applicable, which explains why the book has been assigned in so many organizations and business schools. The fable format makes it faster to read than a conventional management text, and the narrative is engaging enough that the business lesson doesn’t feel forced.

The limitation of Lencioni’s approach is the limitation of the fable format generally: real organizational dysfunction is more complex and politically entrenched than a story with a tidy resolution suggests. The model is a useful diagnostic tool rather than a sufficient prescription. Critics have also noted that the book’s framework, while intuitive, rests more on consulting experience than on rigorous research. For practitioners looking for a shared vocabulary to discuss team problems, however, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team remains genuinely useful and more accessible than denser alternatives.
