Patrick O'Brian was an English novelist celebrated for the Aubrey–Maturin series of naval novels set during the Napoleonic Wars, widely regarded as the finest historical fiction of the sea.

Patrick O’Brian devoted much of his career to a single monumental achievement: the twenty-novel Aubrey–Maturin series, following the friendship between the bluff Royal Navy captain Jack Aubrey and the subtle naval surgeon and intelligence agent Stephen Maturin.

Beginning with Master and Commander, the series recreates the world of the Napoleonic-era navy with extraordinary historical authenticity, rich characterization, wit, and depth, earning comparisons to Jane Austen and Tolstoy and a passionately devoted readership.

O’Brian is celebrated as a master of historical fiction, whose seafaring saga is regarded by many as among the greatest sustained achievements in the genre.
