Sarah Waters is a Welsh novelist acclaimed for atmospheric historical fiction centering lesbian protagonists, author of Fingersmith, Tipping the Velvet, and The Little Stranger.

Sarah Waters is celebrated for richly atmospheric, intricately plotted historical novels, many set in the Victorian era and foregrounding the lives and loves of women, particularly lesbian women.

Her novels Tipping the Velvet, Affinity, and Fingersmith established her reputation, the last a dazzling, twist-laden Victorian thriller. The Night Watch and the unsettling ghost story The Little Stranger further demonstrated her range, and several of her books have been adapted for television and film.

Waters is admired for her immersive period detail, gripping plotting, and her pioneering, sympathetic portrayal of queer history.

Sarah Waters's slow-burning Gothic novel. In postwar England, a country doctor becomes entangled with the genteel, declining Ayres family and their crumbling estate, Hundreds Hall — where a series of disturbing events suggests something malevolent, or something all too human, at work.
