Orwell Prize for Journalism

British journalist and author whose Lost Connections and Stolen Focus argue that depression and attention crisis are driven by social conditions rather than individual brain chemistry.

Johann Hari is a British journalist who spent years reporting on drug policy, addiction, and mental health before writing Lost Connections (2018) and Stolen Focus (2022) — books that argue, respectively, that depression is primarily caused by disconnection from meaningful social and environmental conditions rather than by brain chemistry, and that the modern attention crisis is manufactured by technology designed to exploit psychological vulnerabilities. Both books draw on interviews with researchers, personal narrative, and reportage to build their arguments.

Hari’s strength is synthesis and accessibility. He has a talent for making academic research feel urgent and personal, and Lost Connections in particular resonated with large numbers of readers who recognized their own experience in his framing — people who had been told their suffering was a chemical imbalance and found something validating in an environmental explanation. Stolen Focus, published as concerns about smartphones and attention were reaching mainstream intensity, similarly gave readers a framework for their growing unease.

Hari’s books require a significant caveat: he has a well-documented history of journalistic misconduct, including fabricated quotations and plagiarism discovered in 2011. He made efforts at public apology and restitution, but the question of how to trust his characterizations of research and interviews is live. Specific factual claims in both books have been disputed by researchers he cites. His arguments have merit and deserve engagement — but readers should verify his representations of the underlying science rather than taking them on faith.
