Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan-American author whose emotionally devastating novels about Afghanistan — including The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns — have sold over 38 million copies worldwide.

Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, moved to the United States as a teenager when his father was granted political asylum, and worked as a physician before publishing his debut novel in 2003. The Kite Runner became a global phenomenon, spending over two years on the New York Times bestseller list and introducing millions of Western readers to Afghan history and culture through the lens of personal guilt and redemption. Its follow-up, A Thousand Splendid Suns, published in 2007, was an even more deliberate and structurally accomplished novel.

A Thousand Splendid Suns centers on two women — Mariam and Laila, from different generations and backgrounds — whose lives become bound together under the Taliban regime. Where The Kite Runner follows a man whose failings shape the plot, A Thousand Splendid Suns gives its full weight to female experience, depicting the systematic oppression of women in Afghanistan with specificity and rage that never tips into exploitation. The novel is harder to read in some respects than The Kite Runner precisely because it doesn’t offer the redemptive arc of a male protagonist’s self-recovery.

Hosseini’s critics argue that his books can manipulate emotion too overtly, stacking trauma in ways that feel engineered for maximum catharsis rather than earned through character complexity. That critique has some validity, particularly in The Kite Runner. But his gift for humanizing people from a culture often reduced to headlines in the West, and his insistence on the dignity of individual Afghan lives, gives his work a moral weight that goes beyond sentiment.
