Robert M. Sapolsky is an American neuroendocrinologist and primatologist whose book Behave is a sweeping scientific exploration of the biological roots of human behavior.

Robert Sapolsky is one of the finest science writers working, and Behave is his magnum opus: a tour through the biological determinants of human behavior, from the milliseconds of neurochemistry before an action to the evolutionary history that shaped our social instincts over millions of years. The book examines violence, cooperation, tribalism, empathy, and moral judgment through the interlocking lenses of hormones, neuroscience, genetics, evolution, and culture. It is long, dense, and deeply rewarding.

Sapolsky writes with a distinctive voice — enthusiastic, funny, willing to be awed by complexity — that makes what could be an overwhelming amount of scientific material consistently engaging. His treatment of hot-button questions like free will, criminal responsibility, and intergroup conflict is unusually honest: he follows the evidence rather than reassuring readers that science confirms their existing views. The chapter on adolescent brain development alone is worth the price of the book.

Behave is not light reading — it demands sustained attention and some tolerance for scientific detail. But for readers genuinely interested in what biology tells us about why people behave the way they do, it is one of the most comprehensive and intellectually honest books available. Sapolsky’s willingness to hold contradictory findings in tension, rather than resolving them prematurely, makes it more trustworthy than most popular science.
