Veronica Roth is an American YA author who wrote the Divergent trilogy — Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant — a dystopian series set in a faction-divided future Chicago.

Veronica Roth published Divergent in 2011 while she was still a student at Northwestern University, and the novel’s success — it became a film franchise and sold millions of copies — was one of the defining YA publishing events of the decade. The series is set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago where society is divided into five factions based on human virtues: Dauntless (bravery), Erudite (intelligence), Abnegation (selflessness), Candor (honesty), and Amity (peacefulness). The protagonist Tris doesn’t fit neatly into any faction — she is “Divergent” — and the series follows her discovery of a conspiracy that threatens the entire system.

Divergent is the strongest book in the series: it has energy, a well-built setting, and an appealing protagonist whose specific choice to leave her family for Dauntless feels genuinely weighted. Insurgent broadens the conflict with mixed results, and Allegiant generated enormous controversy with its ending — a genuine narrative risk that many readers found devastating and others found courageous. The final book’s structure (alternating perspectives between Tris and Four) was also criticized for diluting the first-person immediacy that made Divergent compelling.

Roth wrote the series very young and the ambition sometimes outpaces the execution, but Allegiant’s refusal to offer an easy resolution stands as evidence that she was taking her own fiction seriously. The series is uneven, but at its best, it earns its place alongside the better entries in the YA dystopian boom.
