Carlo Rovelli is an Italian theoretical physicist whose lyrical, philosophically rich essays on time, quantum gravity, and reality have made him one of the most widely read science authors in the world.

Carlo Rovelli works at the intersection of quantum gravity and the philosophy of science, and his popular books have introduced a vast general audience to ideas that most physicists assumed would never travel beyond specialist journals. He writes in Italian and has been translated into dozens of languages, becoming one of the rare scientists whose popular work is genuinely shaped by a distinctive literary sensibility.

The Order of Time is his most philosophically ambitious popular book. It dismantles, chapter by chapter, the intuitive model most people have of time — as a universal river flowing at a constant rate, providing a single present shared by all — and replaces it with the much stranger picture that physics actually offers: time flows at different rates depending on gravitational field and velocity, the distinction between past and future may not be fundamental, and the “present” may be a local rather than a universal phenomenon. Rovelli writes about these ideas with the help of Horace, Dante, and Anaximander alongside Boltzmann and Einstein, which is either enchanting or excessive depending on your tolerance for that blend.

The honest caveat is that Rovelli’s literary approach to physics occasionally sacrifices precision for beauty. Some physicists have argued that his presentations, while evocative, compress or slightly misrepresent aspects of the science. His books are best read as serious, intelligent essays on physical ideas rather than as precise technical introductions. For readers who want to encounter current thinking in theoretical physics with emotional and philosophical depth, Rovelli is one of the best guides available.
