Seneca was a Roman Stoic philosopher, playwright, and statesman whose Letters from a Stoic remains one of the most direct and humane introductions to Stoic philosophy ever written.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca wrote his Letters from a Stoic (Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium) in the final years of his life, a series of 124 letters addressed to his friend Lucilius that function as a sustained investigation into how to live well, die without fear, and preserve philosophical integrity amid political danger. Seneca was tutor and advisor to the emperor Nero, a position that placed him at the center of Roman power and ultimately led to his forced suicide in 65 CE — a biographical irony that shadows some of his moralizing about the dangers of wealth and luxury.

The letters are more personal and conversational than most ancient philosophical texts, and that quality is a significant part of their enduring appeal. Seneca writes about friendship, time, ambition, fear of death, the management of anger, and the value of solitude with an immediacy that reads as contemporary rather than ancient. His Stoicism is not the cold, invulnerable variety of popular imagination but a practical philosophy for a person who is trying — imperfectly, self-knowingly — to live with more wisdom than their circumstances would naturally permit.

The gap between Seneca’s philosophy and his life — he preached poverty while accumulating enormous wealth, counseled political detachment while serving a murderous emperor — is a genuine tension that readers can and should hold while reading him. He was aware of the contradiction himself. That honesty about the difficulty of living one’s philosophy makes him more useful as a companion, not less.
