Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction (2011)

Siddhartha Mukherjee is an Indian-American oncologist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author whose books on cancer and genetics are landmark works of medical narrative non-fiction.

Siddhartha Mukherjee is one of the finest science writers working today, and The Emperor of All Maladies — his “biography of cancer” — stands as one of the great popular science books of the twenty-first century. Published in 2010, it traces the history of cancer from ancient Egyptian records to modern targeted therapies, weaving together medical history, personal clinical experience, and the stories of individual patients and researchers with extraordinary narrative skill. The book makes the science accessible without simplifying it, and its emotional dimension — Mukherjee cares visibly about his patients — gives it power beyond what pure history could achieve.

The Gene, published in 2016, applies the same biography-of-an-idea approach to genetics, tracing the concept from Mendel’s peas through the discovery of DNA’s structure to the emergence of CRISPR and the prospect of germline gene editing. It is slightly more diffuse than The Emperor of All Maladies but equally ambitious, and the ethical questions it raises about genetic intervention feel urgent and unsettled.

Mukherjee is a rare writer who can hold scientific rigor, historical sweep, narrative drive, and moral seriousness in simultaneous balance. The Emperor of All Maladies is essential reading for anyone interested in medicine, history, or simply extraordinary non-fiction. The Gene is the right follow-up for readers who want to continue with him.
